Chairman Pip's Railway Thoughts

Steam – it’s the future

You may have heard of the difficulties that the railway has been having over the last few days due to the adverse weather. Obviously an light dusting of snow is enough to bring the railway network to a halt in Great Britain. However, a nice story has emerged from the chaos. Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado was at London Victoria on Monday waiting to depart on a railtour to Dover when staff on the train heard about the difficulties that ordinary commuters were facing due to the cancellations. So, the Chairman of the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust offered 100 stranded commuters a lift, with the train stopping at stations on its route. What a nice gesture from him to help like that. Perhaps it would be worth the TOCs making plans to hire some of the preserved steam locomotives that are registered for the main line in an emergency such as this, as they clearly work a lot better than modern EMUs in adverse weather.
